Who are you when you’re under pressure?

By redfm01

Creating a carefully crafted personal brand is fine but what happens when you find yourself being personally challenged or verbally threatened? How easy is to keep your cool?

In fact who do you become when you’re under pressure?

We can all read books, watch DVDs and listen to CDs, which all explain how we should communicate when dealing with difficult challenges in our lives but the reality is that when you’re under pressure and stress you will behave based on your instincts.

My good friend Deirdre Bounds sums this up really well in her new and incredible book ‘Fulfilled- A Personal Revolution in 7 Steps’, when she talks about the basic human instincts we are all governed by, such as Ambition; Pride; Self Esteem, Companionship etc.

The question is which instincts kick in when you’re under pressure and do you react or respond when faced with a challenging situation?

My tip this week is that when you next feel like someone is personally attacking you, stop for a second and ask yourself ‘Which of my instincts are being threatened here? Is it my pride, my self-esteem, my need for security or is it some other instinct?’

Once you have considered this question, ask yourself another question ‘Is it simply my ego that is hurt or is this a real threat to my well being?’

We all have choices in life and the choice of whether to react or respond is one that will often make the difference between maintaining a relationship with a close friend or a loved one or continuing a previously well cultivated business partnership.

Next time you feel personally challenged, I hope you’ll choose to respond rather than react.

Have a great week and remember to be the best you that you can be 100% of the time

Best wishes

Steve

Great post! Choosing to respond rather than to react when we are under pressure would not only maintain healthy relationships but would also help us to become more mature and better individuals.
